Lee Byung Hun brought charm, fluent English, and just the right amount of mystery to his solo guest appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The Tonight Show released a clip of Lee Byung Hun’s appearance on their YouTube channel on the 18th. The actor appeared on the show ahead of the launch of Netflix series Squid Game Season 3.
Kicking things off, Lee thanked fans for the overwhelming global response to Squid Game, noting, “‘Squid Game’ is a Korean story made by a Korean director with Korean actors and Korean language. So when I first came to LA and New York for a promotion of ‘Squid Game,’ I was so shocked by the fans’ reaction. I’m so grateful and proud of it.”
When Fallon asked about his first impression of the script, Lee recalled, “It was a very, very interesting story with a very unique structure, but at the same time, it was too experimental. So I thought either it’s going to be a huge hit or a complete flop.”
Lee plays the enigmatic Front Man in the series—a masked character whose identity was only revealed late in Season 1. Fallon brought up the iconic mask, prompting Lee to share a behind-the-scenes secret: “I didn’t say it to anybody, even my close friends and mom.” Then talking about his 10-year-old son’s reaction, he shared, “One day, he was so sad and asked me, ‘Why are you so mean?'” adding with a laugh, “I said ‘Why?’ and he said, ‘You killed a lot of people.'”
The show also prepared an O/X quiz segment. Fallon fired off potential spoilers, and Lee responded by pressing ‘O’ or ‘X’ to keep fans guessing.
Asked if more players would discover the Front Man’s identity in Season 3, Lee hit the ‘O’ button. But when asked whether the Front Man would participate in the games himself—or whether another puppet master exists above him—Lee playfully avoided spoilers by hitting both buttons at once, drawing laughter and applause.
Thn to the big question—whether a Front Man spinoff could happen, he pressed ‘O’, elaborating: “I’m not sure about that. But there’s a possibility, and we’ll never know what happens.”
