Ji Seung Hyun opened up about the real-world consequences of his too-convincing portrayal of an unfaithful husband.
Appearing as a guest on MBC’s Radio Star on June 4th, Ji Seung Hyun shared behind-the-scenes stories from his role as a cheating husband in the SBS drama Good Partner.
When told he’d quickly fallen from a beloved warrior to a cheating scum, Ji Seung Hyun laughed and shared, “I was filming ‘Korea–Khitan War’ when the offer for ‘Good Partner’ came in. I hesitated at first, but ultimately took the role because I wanted to show audiences a different side of myself.”
But once ‘Good Partner’ hit the airwaves, things escalated quickly. “After it aired, everything went crazy. People would say things like, ‘You saved the country in ‘Korea–Khitan War,’ and now you’ve betrayed Jang Na Ra?’ They’d joke that I should go back to Goryeo and never reincarnate again,” he recalled. “A gas station owner even smacked me on the back.”
The teasing didn’t stop there. “Even at a ‘Korea–Khitan War’ staff member’s wedding, someone pointed me out and said, ‘That’s Jang Na Ra’s husband—he’s a total bastard'”, he continued.
Ji admitted the role pushed him to uncomfortable places as an actor. “There were some really bad lines. I had to say to my pregnant mistress, ‘Do you have proof it’s my baby?’ I was breaking out in cold sweats while acting. Viewers were so immersed that I even filmed an apology video for the affair,” he said, drawing laughs.
In Good Partner, Ji played Kim Ji Sang, who cheated on his wife Cha Eun Kyung (Jang Na Ra) with Choi Sa Ra (Han Jai). His convincing transformation into an unfaithful husband had viewers genuinely outraged.
In the video, Ji bowed his head and said, “I sincerely apologize. First, I offer my deepest regrets to Cha Eun Kyung, who suffered greatly because of my infidelity. I also apologize to Choi Sa Ra, my mistress.” He then added with a smile, “But honestly, I think all this means I nailed the performance.”
Off screen, Ji Seung Hyun has been married since 2011 and is a proud father of two daughters.
