K-pop group NewJeans, recently promoted as NJZ, has announced an indefinite hiatus following a court ruling that bars them from carrying out independent activities without the approval of their agency, ADOR.
On March 23rd, the group took to the stage at ComplexCon in Hong Kong—what may be their last performance for the foreseeable future—to personally deliver the news to fans. “We’ve decided to suspend all activities in compliance with the court’s ruling,” the members said. “It wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s one we believe is necessary right now.”
The announcement comes just two days after the Seoul Central District Court sided with ADOR in its request for an injunction, effectively blocking the five members of NewJeans from pursuing any solo or independent work until a final verdict is reached in the ongoing legal dispute.
NewJeans’ appearance at ComplexCon had remained on the schedule as the group felt canceling would negatively impact fans and industry partners, even releasing a new song. ADOR reportedly attempted to dispatch staff to support the concert but was unable to contact the members directly.
The unexpected onstage declaration signaled not just a pause in activity—but a clear message: they’re not going back to ADOR. The members grew emotional during the speech, shedding tears.
“We knew from the start this wouldn’t be easy,” said Minji. “We accept the court’s ruling and what it means—but we’ll keep using our voices to protect one another. We don’t regret our decision.” Hyein added, “Some might think it would’ve been better to just stay with ADOR and endure it. But for us, this was about protecting ourselves. That’s how we’ll be able to return even stronger—and we don’t regret it for a second.”
Minji closed the message with a note of hope: “We’re going to take time to regroup and come back stronger. Please know this isn’t the end. We will return—and when we do, we want to meet you with bright smiles on our faces.”
