Singer Wheesung, who passed away on March 10th, has been laid to rest in eternal peace amid a sendoff from his fans.
The funeral service for the late Wheesung was held around 6:30 in the morning on the 16th. Despite the early dawn rain, about 130 people, including fellow musicians, family members, and fans, attended. The funeral began with an introduction of Wheesung’s career and greetings from the chief mourner, his brother Choi Hyuk Sung.
“While the physical life of Choi Wheesung has ended, his music and his spiritual life will be eternal,” Choi said. “I believe my brother will live on with us as long as his songs are heard and sung in this world.”
In the eulogy, the president of Wheesung’s fan club said through tears, “For 23 years, Wheesung gifted music that was hope, happiness, and comfort to many with his unique talent and distinctive voice. I was happy and grateful to be a fan of Wheesung, who was always sorry for not being able to fully express his love and gratitude to his fans.”
When Wheesung’s song “The Day We Meet Again” played alongside video footage of his performances, the funeral hall filled with the sounds of fans breaking down in tears. After the ceremony, Choi comforted the grieving fans, saying, “I hope you’ll play his songs so that the next generation can also talk about Wheesung. You know that anyone who listens to my brother’s songs becomes a fan, right?”
Singers Ha Dong Qn, Sangchu of Mighty Mouth, and family members carried the coffin as they left the hall. Fans lined up outside bid their personal farewells as the deceased departed.
During the mourning period, IU, Lee Hyori, Kim Tae Woo, K.Will, Younha, Ali, Ailee, and several broadcasters visited the funeral home. BTS, TWICE, Zico, and Park Jung Hyun sent condolence wreaths to express their sympathies.
Wheesung, who debuted in 2002 with “Can’t We,” led the R&B wave of the 2000s with hits like “With Me” and “Insomnia.” He later demonstrated his talents as a lyricist and producer, writing lyrics for several hit songs including Younha’s “Password 486” and Ailee’s “Heaven.”
Wheesung has been laid to rest at Gwangneung Memorial Park.
