Former K-pop idol Heo Ga Yoon, the main vocalist of the group 4Minute, has opened up about the heartbreaking family tragedy that completely changed her life perspective.
In a video released on the YouTube channel Sebasi on January 14, Heo shared the story of losing her older brother. “One day, my mother called while I was sleeping,” she recalled. “Her voice was uncharacteristically calm. She told me that my brother had suddenly passed away.”
Heo’s brother died in 2020 following the sudden deterioration of a chronic illness. He had worked tirelessly at a medical company, often missing family dinners due to his heavy workload.
“He often spoke about wanting to live independently once he saved enough money, wishing to travel long-term and pursuing work he truly enjoyed,” Heo said. “Tragically, he passed away not long after achieving his first goal of living on his own.”
A Wake-Up Call
Sorting through her brother’s belongings was a turning point for the singer. “Everything in his house was brand new,” she shared. “Home appliances were unused and recently purchased electronics were still in their original packaging. It broke my heart that he left without being able to enjoy any of it. I kept thinking, ‘Life is truly futile.'”
The realization that her brother spent his life working without achieving his dreams led Heo to a radical decision.
“I decided, ‘Let’s live without regrets, even if I were to die tomorrow. Let’s live for my happiness, not for success or honor,'” she explained. “Those thoughts allowed me to leave for Bali without hesitation.”
Heo Ga Yoon debuted with 4Minute in 2009. Following the group’s disbandment in 2016, she has been living in Bali, Indonesia, embracing a new chapter focused on personal happiness.
