As news spreads that the late actress Kim Sae Ron was distressed by privacy-invading videos from a former entertainment reporter turned YouTuber, the public demands regulatory action against the set content creator.
According to the National Assembly e-Petition website, a petition titled “Request for Strong National Assembly Sanctions to Prevent Celebrity Suicides and Other Harms Caused by Entertainment Reporter Turned YouTuber” has garnered over 46,000 signatures as of 11 PM on the 13th KST.
Petitioner “A” explained the motivation behind the campaign: “The social problem of entertainment reporters harassing celebrities to the point of stalking through their YouTube channels is not a new issue. Recently, another young actress met a tragic end through suicide because of such behavior.”
The petition, registered following the death of actress Kim Sae Ron, condemns the situation where entertainment figures, including Kim, have suffered from privacy exposés by the former entertainment reporter who has transitioned to YouTube.
The petition continues, “Behavior that amounts to stalking and harassment of celebrities—which would have been filtered out for ethical reasons in traditional mass media—is now proceeding without any restrictions in the YouTube world, solely for public attention.” It emphasizes that “It’s no exaggeration to say that YouTube now has the greatest influence on citizens’ daily lives, and we must establish basic qualification requirements for YouTubers and create precise regulations and standards comparable to existing mass media for the videos and stories they disseminate.”
Kim Sae Ron was found deceased at her home on February 16th. Following her death, Kim’s family claimed she had suffered during her lifetime due to privacy invasions by a certain YouTuber. The specific YouTuber has defended himself, stating, “Some are claiming that I tormented the deceased during her lifetime, but this is a baseless accusation. I have sufficient evidence to refute this.” Despite this response, criticism continues to mount.
The petition runs until March 26th, and if it receives more than 50,000 signatures, it will be formally referred to the relevant National Assembly committees for consideration.
