Squid Game creator Hwang Dong Hyuk has addressed the controversial incident involving actor Park Sung Hoon and a pornographic poster parodying the hit Netflix series.
In an interview on January 2nd, the acclaimed director shared his thoughts on the social media scandal that erupted just four days after Squid Game 2 premiered on December 26th. The controversy began when Park Sung Hoon accidentally posted—and quickly deleted—a NSFW poster that appropriated the Squid Game concept.
“This kind of thing happened during Season 1 as well,” Hwang said, expressing his displeasure. “Isn’t this something that always happens when a work becomes famous?” The director emphasized that “it completely destroys the meaning of the work itself.”
Hwang revealed he hasn’t directly discussed the matter with Park, adding, “I want to know who sent that photo to Park Sung Hoon and how it ended up being posted.”
The incident occurred on December 30th when Park briefly posted the X-rated poster on his social media. Despite quick deletion, the image spread rapidly through online communities, causing significant backlash.
Park’s agency initially claimed “it was accidentally uploaded while checking DMs,” but this explanation faced scrutiny as Instagram doesn’t have such functionality. They later revised his statement, explaining, “Park received (the set content) via DM and, determining it problematic, attempted to forward it to company personnel.”
