Director Kang Min Gu of upcoming drama Namib has addressed the comparisons between the series and the recent industry buzz surrounding NewJeans and their former producer Min Hee Jin. At the press conference held December 16th at D-Cube City in Sindorim, Seoul, for the Genie TV original drama Namib, Director Kang was joined by cast members Ryeoun, Yoon Sang Hyun, and Lee Jin Woo.
Namib tells the story of Kang Su Hyun, a fired star producer who crosses paths with Yu Jin Woo, a former trainee who got kicked out. The series stars Go Hyun Jung as Kang Su Hyun and Ryeoun as Yu Jin Woo. Yoon Sang Hyun transforms into Shim Jun Seok, Kang Su Hyun’s husband and a former music producer, while Lee Jin Woo takes on the role of their son, Shim Jin Woo.
During the press conference, questions arose about parallels to Min Hee Jin, the former CEO of ADOR known for producing NewJeans, who recently made headlines due to conflicts with HYBE, ADOR’s parent company. Director Kang addressed the matter head-on: “I was aware (of the reactions). However, ‘Namib’ was planned and produced long before those events. I’m not particularly concerned about it. Our work is our work, and that’s a separate matter.”
The director also expressed enthusiasm about Go Hyun Jung’s portrayal of the star producer Kang Su Hyun. “Su Hyun is a charismatic star producer. And Go Hyun Jung has such a magnetic presence; the charisma just radiates from her performance. Our work captures both that aura and her subtle, delicate acting that conveys emotion and resonance even in the smallest gestures,” he teased.
Namib is set to premiere on ENA at 10 PM on December 23rd KST. The series will be available for free streaming on KT Genie TV and Genie TV Mobile immediately after broadcast.
