In a highly anticipated collaboration, Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won team up under the pen of Park Ji Eun, the mastermind behind rom-com classics like Crash Landing on You and My Love from the Star. The new drama, Queen of Tears, promises to captivate audiences both domestically and internationally, raising the bar set by the global phenomenon Crash Landing on You. In hopes to reach that bar, or maybe even go beyond it, the cast promised to do a “big bow challenge” if it meets their high expectations.
At the production press conference held in Seoul on the 7th, for the new tvN weekend drama Queen of Tears, director Jang Young Woo, Kim Hee Won, and actors Kim Soo Hyun, Kim Ji Won, Park Sung Hoon, Kwak Dong Yeon, and Lee Joo Bin were in attendance. Queen of Tears unravels the story of an heiress to the Queens Group, Hong Hae In (Kim Ji Won), and Baek Hyun Woo (Kim Soo Hyun), the son of the village chief of Yongduri, navigating through the rocky terrains of a three-year marriage, teetering on the brink of crisis and miraculous rekindling of their love.
The pairing of Kim Soo Hyun, the “rom-com king,” and Kim Ji Won, the “rom-com queen,” as a married couple three years in, has already garnered significant attention. The duo shared high praise for each other, with Kim Soo Hyun stating, “Everyone would agree that Kim Ji Won is a kind person,” and lauding her as the “Queen of Consideration.”
Kim Ji Won expressed her admiration for her co-star’s fun and upbeat nature, mentioning how his energy helped ease her initial worries and tensions on set. “He’s my opposite in many ways, having great stamina and being an energizer. I was able to shoot well because of the energy I received from him,” she reflected, reciprocating the warmth.
For Kim Soo Hyun, Queen of Tears marks his first role as a husband and his return to the screen after three years since It’s Okay to Not Be Okay. “This is not only my first married role but also the first in portraying living with the in-laws. I wanted to experience and express this through the character,” he shared. “The character has many charms, including delicacy, intelligence, and a bit of foolishness, which I hope to mix well to make the audience laugh and cry.”
Kim Ji Won also reflected on the complexities of stepping into her character’s shoes, stating, “I shared similar concerns with Kim Soo Hyun. Meeting a character for the first time, filled with emotions different from those during the dating phase, and portraying conflict or coldness towards her husband was challenging.” Despite the difficulties, she added, “I consistently discussed and built the character with Kim Soo Hyun and the directors.”
Meanwhile, Queen of Tears prepares for its premiere on the 9th at 9:20 PM KST.
