The year-end drama awards for KBS, SBS, and MBC have all concluded. At the events, many actors paid tribute to their fellow actor Lee Sun Kyun, whose recent death shocked many.
Lee Sang Yeob mentioned the actor in his acceptance speech at the 2023 KBS Drama Awards held on December 31st. He first expressed gratitude, saying, “I stand on this stage today thanks to the support from the cast, crew, and my beloved family and friends. I will strive to become a person and actor who can reciprocate their love in the future.” He then added, “I wish all the blessings upon you all next year. And please,” barely finishing the sentence while holding back tears. He hastily concluded the speech, saying, “I hope you will be happy there.”
The SBS Drama Awards on the 29th also featured heartfelt tributes to the late actor.
Jin Sun Kyu, the winner of the Best Performance Award, expressed his deepest condolences, stating, “There have been many painful moments in the last days of 2023, but I hope they become beautiful memories that last for a very long time.”
Park Sung Woong received the Top Excellence Award and said, “I want to pay a tribute instead of giving an acceptance speech. I wish you a peaceful rest in a world free from pain and worries. As I stand on this stage today, the day we sent you to heaven, I am honored to receive an award in your memory. Always sincere in my acting, I dedicate this award to you up in the sky. Farewell, my brother.”
Kim Nam Gil, who stood as the Grand Prize presenter, referenced the late Lee Sun Kyun’s famous line, saying, “I wish all actors find comfort in the coming year.”
Lee Je Hoon, the Grand Prize recipient, shared his thoughts, stating, “Today is an incredibly painful day. Personally, I had no connection to him in my works, and our moments together were fleeting. However, watching the path he walked inspired me to nurture the dream of becoming an actor. I want to dedicate this award to him. I hope he finds comfort and happiness in heaven.”
