The 2023 SBS Drama Awards, set to take place today (29th) at 8:40 PM KST at the SBS Prism Tower, is creating anticipation with a lineup of awards for key figures in 2024 SBS dramas, an unpredictable grand prize winner, and celebration stages featuring actors and singers. Amidst this, the voting method for the “Best Couple” has sparked controversy.
Addressing the ongoing controversy, SBS told Xportsnews, “The criteria for the Best Couple have been consistent every year, and due to numerous inquiries regarding this year’s award criteria, we have spelled it out clearly. We would appreciate it if you’d wait and check the result through the broadcast.”
Previously, SBS conducted the Best Couple voting through its official website from 9 AM on the 18th to 1 PM on the 27th KST. Nominees included Ryeoun-Shin Ye Eun from The Secret Romantic Greathouse, Ahn Hyo Seop-Lee Sung Kyung from Dr. Romantic 3, and Song Kang-Kim Yoo Jung from My Demon.
Song Kang and Kim Yoo Jung secured overwhelming votes with their solid fan base. However, after the deadline, SBS added a post stating, “The Best Couple is selected based on the voting results, votes from each drama’s production team, internal voting by SBS and Studio S employees, viewership ratings, and other factors.”
This led to criticism and controversy, especially after Song Kang announced his absence from the event due to his schedule. Fans reacted with comments like, “‘My Demon’ had almost three times the votes of the runner-up, a difference of 220,000 votes,” “Does this mean they won’t be given the award?”, and “Is this because Song Kang isn’t attending?”
With SBS’s statement that this has been the “rule every year” and to “check the result on the broadcast,” interest in which couple will win the Best Couple is mounting.
