Byun Hee Bong of ‘The Host,’ and ‘Okja’ Passes Away at 81

Another heartbreaking news has struck the Korean entertainment industry.

On September 18th, news outlets reported the sad news of Byun Hee Bong‘s passing.  Earlier, it was revealed that the late actor had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and received a clean bill of health after undergoing treatment. However, he had unfortunately experienced a relapse and passed away after a long battle.

Byun Hee Bong started his career as a voice actor on MBC in 1966. Later on, he appeared in movies directed by Bong Joon Ho, The Host and Okja, and became known as Bong Joon Ho’s favorite actor.

Before starring in drama Mr. Sunshine, Byun Hee Bong was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In 2019, he openly talked about his health condition and received tremendous support from viewers.
