The second movie adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie, follows a sorcerer named Yuta Okkotsu who confronts a powerful spell-caster named Suguru Geto who will put everyone in Tokyo Jujutsu High in danger. Director Park Sung Hoo, who helmed the TV animation series, sat down for an interview to share what we should expect from the upcoming movie.

Q1. How did you feel when you first heard about the movie production?

I was thrilled. I always wanted to make the episode into an animated sequence so making a movie out of it felt like a dream come true.

Q2. Were there any changes you wished to apply in the movie production?

Unlike TV animations, movies have to keep the audience focused, so I tried my best to make the story as fast and exciting as possible. Since movies don’t have an intermission or a commercial break, I really focused on delivering a compelling story that would make people keep watching the film. The movie takes place a year after Yuta Okkotsu enrolls at Tokyo Jujutsu High. We used colors and sounds that are only possible in animated movies when creating the passage of time and the changing seasons.

Q3. Were there any challenges in turning a volume of comics into a movie?

The stories in the original work alone were not enough to make a whole movie, so we added some scenes that could bring out the craze from the audience. The battle between Gojo and Miguel and the appearance of Ieiri and Mei Mei were added to the movie production.

Q4. Yuta Okkotsu mainly uses his sword when he fights. Were there any movements you particularly paid attention to when drawing him in action?

In the scene where Okkotsu and Rika fight against Geto, I tried to make the fight scene as spectacular as possible. But when I read the original work again, I came to think that teamwork and harmony between the two are more important than anything else. So, when I had a meeting with the animator, I explained that I want the scene to show their true friendship and harmony when they confront Geto together.

Q5. What was the one thing that you paid attention to when drawing Rika becoming a curse?

Following the original work, Rika still maintains her pure soul and gentle energy even though she has become a cursed spirit. However, since we wanted the audience to feel frightened by her very existence, the scene where Rika eradicates evil spirits is designed to be a little eerie and scary from the planning stage.

Q6. The brilliant action scenes in the series drew much attention. What are the key takeaways from this upcoming movie?

We have put an extra effort into making the battle scene between Gojo and Miguel and the ultimate collaboration between Okkotsu and Rika. There will also be some cool action scenes between those in Tokyo Jujutsu High. Although they will be brief, the movie will showcase each and everyone’s abilities as they fight. I hope you enjoy the music and drawings as well. We made all the music to best suit the movements of the picture. I strongly wish that you enjoy the movie at theaters.
