Son Ye Jin has cleared the air after a child actor joke at the No Other Choice press conference drew unexpected controversy.
On Tuesday, the actress addressed the matter in an interview while discussing the upcoming Park Chan Wook–directed film.
The issue began at the film’s press conference last month, when Lee Byung Hun joked that Son Ye Jin had ignored a child actor’s question during filming. She quickly explained that she had been too focused on memorizing a heavy load of dialogue to respond. Still, the exchange quickly spread online and sparked speculation about her character, until the child actor’s mother stepped in to share positive stories about Son, effectively ending the uproar.
Reflecting on the incident, Son Ye Jin said, “Common sense tells you that you don’t joke like that unless you’re close. The audience doesn’t know the history I share with Byung Hun. We’ve known each other for a long time.”
She continued, “It was really just a funny anecdote he shared. He exaggerated it because he wanted to make people laugh, but none of us expected it would be misunderstood in such a way.”
According to Son, Lee Byung Hun later apologized, saying he never intended harm. “He said, ‘I just wanted to be funny, I never meant it to be twisted like that,’” she recalled. “If I hadn’t taken it as a joke, maybe it would have been an issue. But since there was no bad intention, I told him there was no need to apologize.” She laughed as she added, “After that, we joked that within our group, chasing laughs is officially banned.”
No Other Choice follows Man Soo (Lee Byung Hun), an office worker who thought his life was complete until he’s suddenly laid off. To protect his wife (Son Ye Jin), their children, and their hard-won home, he prepares for a personal war to find reemployment. The film opens in Korea on September 24th.
