Kim Soo Hyun’s agency has taken legal action against online haters for defamation and insults, but the move has sparked a heated debate.
Some netizens have criticized the actor, accusing him of dodging accountability. They’ve posted comments like, “He’s deflecting blame instead of taking responsibility,” “You lied to the entire country, and now you’re upset about hate comments?” and “Still showing no remorse” and “What’s the point of suing people? What people need is honesty, not lawsuits.”
On the other hand, many netizens voiced their support for Kim, saying, “The real problem is people who post hateful things without checking the facts,” “We stand by you. YouTubers spreading baseless rumors and trolls blindly following them should be held accountable,” “Haters need to face consequences,” and “This is clearly defamation and character assassination. There should be no leniency.”
Meanwhile, an online petition calling to “end online witch hunts” has been gaining momentum.
On April 12th, a video from Kim Soo Hyun’s fan meeting in Japan was shared by an international fan account, accompanied by messages of support. One fan wrote, “There are days when I cry, but I’ll keep supporting you with a steady heart,” adding, “We believe in the integrity of the path Kim Soo Hyun has walked, and we’re not going anywhere.”
The post also linked to a petition urging the protection of Kim’s human rights. It expressed concern over contract cancellations, privacy violations, online harassment and social backlash fueled by unverified rumors, calling the situation a “modern-day online witch hunt” that disregards the presumption of innocence, even in cases where mistakes may have been made.
Fans around the world continue to rally behind Kim, sending encouraging messages like, “You have fans everywhere who support you. Please stay strong and don’t lose heart.”
Kim Soo Hyun is currently on a break from all public activities amid controversy surrounding his past relationship with the late actress Kim Sae Ron. At a press conference held on March 31st, he admitted, “It’s true we were in a relationship, but we never dated when she was a minor, and I never pressured her for money.” He has since filed lawsuits against both Kim Sae Ron’s family and the YouTube channel Garo Sero Institute, which first raised the allegations.
