Ju Ji Hoon candidly revealed his impoverished but happy childhood on a recent variety appearance.

On the March 12th broadcast of tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, actor Ju Ji Hoon, who’s receiving global acclaim for his drama The Trauma Code, appeared as a guest.

Known as one of the entertainment industry’s biggest chatterboxes, Ju Ji Hoon honestly answered what kind of son he is at home: “I don’t say a word at home.” Nevertheless, he emphasized growing up in a loving family. He shared stories of his mother’s dedication, saying, “Despite difficult circumstances, my mother resumed her studies. She passed her GED while cooking dishes for us every day and taking care of all household chores. Later, she would wake up at 4 AM to prepare for college, sending us to school before studying at an academy in Jongno.”

He confessed to growing up in economically challenging conditions. “We were by no means well-off when I was young,” he reminisced. “We lived in a small shop selling dried fish, a single room with sliding glass doors. It was cramped and poorly insulated, making winters especially cold, and we had to heat water on a coal briquette stove to bathe. But none of that mattered. On rainy days, my mother would open the sliding doors wide and make pancakes for us, and those are one of my happiest moments.”

The actor revealed that his father worked as a construction laborer who could only rest during the rainy season. “If the sun was out, my father had to work. So I loved the rainy season. Perhaps that’s why I still enjoy swimming on rainy days. The water feels warmer. Since I was a boy, I played in the fields where my mother worked, and at lunchtime, we’d cook rice in a large pot over an open fire. That’s why my skin is so dark. Surprisingly, I’ve never actually tanned,” he added.

Ju Ji Hoon left a warm video message for his family. “Dad’s legs haven’t been good lately, and though I might not show it, I’m very worried. I hope he takes better care of his health. Mom, I hope you stay healthy and continue exercising as you do now. And I hope my sister Hye Ran’s Pilates business does well,” he said, showing affection for his family.
