Lee Min Ho has opened up about why he chose to take a break just as his career was taking off following the massive success of Boys Over Flowers.

Appearing on the September 14th episode of the YouTube show Zzanbro alongside Ryu Hye Young and others, Lee reflected on the dramatic changes he experienced after the hit drama catapulted him to stardom.

“After Boys Over Flowers, this image of me suddenly appeared out of nowhere,” Lee said. “There was a disconnect. I had to adjust to it too.”

Despite being flooded with offers at the height of his newfound popularity, Lee said he chose not to immediately capitalize on the momentum. After completing an important advertising commitment already on his schedule, he told his agency, “I need to take a break.”

Rather than taking on more projects, Lee felt he needed time to understand himself amid the sudden fame and the public persona that had formed around him.

“I needed to clearly understand what kind of values I had as a person,” he explained.

Lee also revealed that his real personality differs from the serious, polished image people may associate with him. He described himself as having a goofy and affectionate side, even admitting that he deliberately uses playful expressions when texting so his messages do not come across as too cold.

The conversation also revisited Lee’s now-famous fall on the red carpet at the Baeksang Arts Awards following Boys Over Flowers. The actor took such a dramatic tumble that some people even wondered whether he had done it intentionally.

Shin Dong Yup joked, “When a handsome guy falls, it makes him seem more human. It’s funny.”

Lee also showed some playful confidence when the topic turned to fellow 1987-born actor Ji Chang Wook, who reportedly considers himself especially cute. Lee acknowledged, “He is cute,” before revealing that when they met in person, he told Ji, “No, you’re not all that.”

Lee ultimately described his own idea of a cute face as a softer, rounder “tofu-like” look, pointing to fellow guest Lee Dae Myung as an example.
