BTS made history with a show-stopping performance at the first-ever FIFA World Cup final halftime show.
The group took the stage at New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19, joining Madonna, Shakira and Justin Bieber as co-headliners for the landmark event.
“It is an honor beyond words to perform on such a historic stage,” BTS said through BigHit Music. “It felt like a dream to join these amazing artists and children from around the world in calling for ‘love.'”
The group added, “None of this would have been possible without ARMY’s incredible influence. We sincerely thank everyone who watched.”
Dressed in sleek red looks inspired by South Korea’s Red Devils supporters, the seven members performed their Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Dynamite” to roaring cheers.
They also gave the song a World Cup spin, changing some lyrics to soccer-themed lines including “kick the ball” and “a game of football.”
A giant Earth-shaped image filled the field beneath them, symbolizing unity, peace and solidarity as BTS brought fans across cultures and generations together.
The group later returned for the finale, joining Coldplay, Shakira, Justin Bieber, Sesame Street, The Muppets and New York’s PS 22 Chorus for “We Dance,” a song Coldplay created for the tournament.
Produced by Global Citizen, the halftime show also spotlighted the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which supports education and access to sports for children in underserved communities.
BTS came into the performance fresh off the European leg of their “BTS WORLD TOUR ‘ARIRANG,'” which drew about 717,000 fans across 10 shows in Madrid, Brussels, London, Munich and Paris.
The group will kick off the North American leg at MetLife Stadium in New York on Aug. 1 and 2.
