K-pop star PSY has been referred to prosecutors over allegations that he received prescriptions for controlled medications without in-person medical consultations and had his manager pick them up on his behalf.

MBC reported that the Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office recently received the case from the police. Six people are under investigation, including a professor at a Seoul university hospital, three resident doctors, Psy’s manager, and PSY himself. They are suspected of violating South Korea’s Medical Service Act.

PSY is accused of receiving prescriptions for Xanax and Stilnox from a Seoul university hospital between February 2022 and July 2024 without meeting doctors in person. He is also accused of having his manager collect the medications for him.

Xanax and Stilnox are prescription drugs commonly used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders. Because they carry a risk of dependence and abuse, they are generally prescribed only after an in-person medical consultation.

Under South Korean law, doctors are generally required to examine patients directly before issuing prescriptions. Prescriptions are also not supposed to be provided to people who have not personally received medical treatment.

During the police investigation, PSY’s agency, P NATION, acknowledged the issue and apologized.

“The act of having prescription sleep medication collected by a proxy was clearly a mistake and an oversight,” the agency said.
