Yoo Ji Won, the writer of MBC drama Perfect Crown, has publicly apologized following backlash over the series’ historical accuracy controversy.

In a statement posted May 19th on MBC’s viewer board, Yoo said, “I sincerely apologize for causing disappointment and concern to viewers due to the controversy surrounding the historical accuracy of ‘Perfect Crown.'” She also apologized for delaying her response, saying she worried speaking out too quickly could create even more discomfort.

Perfect Crown is a romance fantasy set in a fictional constitutional monarchy where Korea’s royal family still exists in modern times. Yoo said she hoped to showcase “Korean traditions and beauty” through the series, but admitted there was “a lack of thorough research and historical verification” while adapting Joseon-era royal customs into a modern fictional setting.

The controversy centered on a coronation scene featuring the term “Cheonse (a thousand years),” historically associated with vassal states, along with the use of ceremonial attire tied to lower-ranking rulers rather than emperors. Yoo acknowledged she failed to fully consider the historical context behind those elements.

“I once again deeply apologize to everyone who was hurt by my lack of deeper consideration,” she wrote, adding that she would reflect on the criticism and her shortcomings as a writer.

Though Perfect Crown wrapped last Saturday with a personal-best nationwide rating of 13.8% and ranked No. 1 in its time slot, the show became increasingly embroiled in controversy during its final week.

Episode 11 sparked especially strong criticism over disputed royal terminology, ceremonial details and scenes viewers said resembled Chinese tea traditions rather than Korean customs.

As backlash grew, the production team released an apology through the show’s official website, saying they failed to carefully examine how Joseon royal protocols evolved throughout history.

Lead stars IU and Byeon Woo Seok also shared apology statements on Instagram on the 18th, while director Park Joon Hwa later called the controversy “a mistake with no excuse.”
