Hwang Dong Hyuk is gearing up for his next project—and he says it will be even more intense than Squid Game.
According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director’s upcoming film is titled KO Club (Killing Old People Club), a feature inspired by Umberto Eco’s essay How Old People Survive.
Set in a near future where generational conflict has reached a breaking point, the story centers on a chilling premise: a “removal list” targeting the elderly, who are seen as monopolizing wealth and power. As society spirals, older individuals are forced into hiding, fighting to survive against younger generations—blending Hwang’s signature social commentary with a darker, more violent edge.
Hwang made it clear the film won’t hold back. “It will be more brutal than ‘Squid Game,'” he said, pointing to real-world tensions across East Asia, including aging populations, pension strain, and growing resentment among younger generations.
“Inequality, capitalism, and social justice aren’t problems that can be solved all at once,” he added. “But as a director, I believe in continuing to raise questions without giving up.”
The project is already moving forward. Hwang shared that he plans to complete script revisions within two months, with casting underway. Pre-production is expected to begin this fall, followed by filming next spring.
As for release plans, the director is still weighing his options. While Netflix remains a strong possibility, he expressed a desire for a theatrical release. “Korean theaters are going through a difficult time,” he said. “But for this film, I want audiences to experience it on the big screen, not just on a phone.”
Beyond directing, Hwang is also expanding his work as a producer. Through his company, Firstman Studio, he is developing the Netflix original series The Dealer (literal title), starring Jung So Min, Ryoo Seung Bum, and Lee Soo Hyuk.
After tackling social taboos in projects like Silenced and Squid Game, all eyes are now on how Hwang Dong Hyuk will push boundaries once again with KO Club.
