A doctor working at a hospital owned by psychiatrist Yang Jae Woong—known for his relationship with EXID alum and actress Hani—has been arrested in connection with a patient’s death that occurred last year.
The Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency’s special investigation unit announced on October 20th that it had detained a hospital physician, identified only as A, on charges of involuntary manslaughter due to professional negligence. According to authorities, the Incheon District Court approved the warrant, citing “risk of evidence destruction.”
Investigators allege that on May 27th, 2024, A failed to take proper safety precautions for a woman in her 30s who was being treated for diet-pill addiction, leading to her death just 17 days after she was admitted.
The case sparked outrage after reports surfaced that the patient had been found restrained by her hands and feet at the time of her death. Public debate has since erupted online over the hospital’s treatment practices and its responsibility in the incident—a controversy amplified by Yang’s public profile.
Hani, who has been in an openly acknowledged relationship with Yang, suspended her entertainment activities and indefinitely postponed their planned wedding in the wake of the scandal. The couple clarified earlier that they had not separated, but were focusing on “personal matters.”
Police previously sought arrest warrants for three hospital staff members, including A, but prosecutors initially rejected the request. After a review by the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office, it was deemed appropriate to move forward with A’s arrest.
In total, 11 individuals, including Yang Jae Woong himself, are currently under investigation in connection with the case.
