Lee Min Jung has opened up about her relationship history with husband Lee Byung Hun, revealing that the two once broke up after a year of dating.
Speaking on her YouTube channel, the actress recalled, “I met Byung Hun right before ‘Boys Over Flowers’ exploded. We dated for a year, but then he had to go abroad for more than a year. From his perspective, I was just starting my career and maybe he felt it wasn’t right to hold me back. So he said, ‘I’ll be gone, so let’s just end it here.’ And I thought, ‘How dare he?’”
Lee explained she saw no real reason to end things. “I felt like the year abroad was just an excuse. If you truly love someone, you don’t break up for that. To me, saying ‘let’s split’ meant there was no love, so I cut him off right there.”
But the story didn’t end there. She added, “Out of the blue, he called me from overseas. Because of the time difference, I would just hang up or ignore the calls, then text the next day, ‘Sorry, I was sleeping.’ Sometimes I wouldn’t even reply. Later, when I attended the Baeksang and Blue Dragon Awards as a Best New Actress nominee for ‘Cyrano Agency,’ I saw him there. He gave me a little nod, but I just ignored him. That’s how it went—until we eventually got back together and ended up marrying.”
The actress also took the chance to address long-standing silver spoon rumors about her privileged background. “It’s true that my grandfather and uncle won presidential awards in the art field, and one uncle was a KAIST professor who even did research at a South Pole station,” she said. “But that didn’t mean I grew up with unlimited wealth. We weren’t the kind of family that could splurge freely.” Actresses Lee So Yeon and Wang Bit Na, who appeared on the episode as her besties, added that Lee had paid her own tuition and worked part-time jobs throughout college.
Lee Min Jung and Lee Byung Hun married in 2013. They welcomed their first son in 2015, followed by a daughter in December 2023.
