SHINee’s Key shared a heartfelt reflection about late bandmate Jonghyun and the enduring bond of the iconic K-pop group.
On the February 12th broadcast of tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, Key appeared alongside his mother, where he opened up about one of the most challenging periods in his life.
Speaking candidly about Jonghyun’s passing, Key revealed, “I hit rock bottom at that time. I kept thinking, ‘What is life?’ I even considered quitting everything.”
The artist recalled how the group found healing through performance, specifically mentioning their emotional Tokyo Dome concert. “I was really broken, and this concert at Tokyo Dome was the one where we went ‘let’s overcome this together,'” he shared. “We needed a place to commemorate him together. It would have been too difficult without it. That’s how we wanted to send him off—his brilliant, brief youth.”
In another touching moment, Key revealed, “Every year when his birthday or memorial day comes around, I really miss him and long for him. When we have new songs that we can no longer record together, I often think ‘he would have done this so well.’ He appeared in my dreams a lot during practice sessions. It’s not like he gives me messages like a revelation or anything, but when we have concert meetings, he’s just sitting there. When we practice, he’s sitting there. He’s always with us. We (SHiNee) will always be five.”
Jonghyun passed away on December 18th, 2017, at the age of 27.
