Cha Joo Young has addressed the buzz surrounding the mature content in her hit series The Queen Who Crowns, expressing both her artistic stance and slight disappointment at the public’s narrow focus.
In an interview with SportvNews on Thursday, Cha, who garnered critical acclaim for her portrayal of the autonomous Queen Wongyeong in the recently concluded tvN X TVING original series, shared her thoughts on the show’s controversial scenes.
“It’s disappointing that the spotlight was on us showing our skins. What’s disappointing is disappointing,” Cha candidly shared. “People tend to see only what they want to see.”
The series sparked debate over its mature content, with some arguing the scenes weren’t essential to the plot. Adding fuel to the controversy were claims that these scenes weren’t in the original script. However, show representatives countered these claims, stating, “We had two different versions for the TV broadcast and OTT from the start and conducted casting with full disclosure that the OTT version would be rated adult-only.”
Addressing the controversy, Cha took a measured approach: “I actually prefer not to discuss this as it doesn’t only involve me,” she revealed. “I didn’t have any reservations about the bedroom scenes between the married couple. If there was something I could do, I wanted to do it. There’s too much that happened to open up about it.”
The actress then shared, “My family watched the tvN version. I didn’t want to have uncomfortable conversations,” she explained. “I don’t know if people will understand, but I had considered the possibility of the show ending prematurely. That’s how much I wanted this project to conclude well. I hoped our collective hard work wouldn’t be overshadowed by a singular focus.”
