NewJeans members have announced that they will continue their activities under the new name “NJZ” and even release a new song.
On February 7th, the members shared the news on social media, saying, “Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein will begin a surprising new journey as NJZ in 2025. We’re excited for you to see what’s next!” They also posted a group photo and revealed their debut song as NJZ will drop on March 23rd.
This name change follows a contest the members held to choose a temporary group name, ultimately deciding on NJZ.
However, the new name has received a mixed reception. Some fans criticized it, saying things like, “It’s just initials,” “Could this cause legal problems?” and “What does it even stand for?”

Others were more positive, asking, “Is it pronounced ‘Enjayzee’?” and saying, “Even with the name change, it’s still clearly NewJeans, which is great,” “Excited for this new chapter! We’re rooting for you, NJZ!” and “It’s perfect! Thanks for coming back so soon!”

NJZ is perfect! ✨ I was thinking of ‘NewJeanZ’ when they asked for a new name. My only concern is the legality. ADOR/HYBE has the rights to the original name & I think NJZ is different enough to avoid copyright infringement but it needs to be officially approved by the courts… pic.twitter.com/PiMtJS4LYk

ADOR, NewJeans’ agency, responded to the announcement, telling Xportsnews, “We deeply regret that the members made such a unilateral decision before a legal ruling on the validity of their exclusive contracts with ADOR has been issued.”
They added, “ADOR will do everything to protect the NewJeans brand. We are always open to meeting with the NewJeans members or their legal representatives to clear up any misunderstandings and discuss the group’s future activities.”
