Squid Game 2 actress Lee Joo Shil has passed away at the age of 81.

Her agency, 1230 Culture, confirmed the news that the actress passed away on the morning of February 2nd due to stomach cancer.

According to the agency, her health began to decline about three months ago, leading to a hospital visit where she was diagnosed with stomach cancer. She suffered a cardiac arrest that morning and was taken to the Catholic University of Korea Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital, where she sadly passed away.

Lee Joo Shil began her career as a stage actress in 1965, starring in plays like Death of a Salesman and Macbeth. She was a major figure in Korean theater during the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1993, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and was told she had only a year to live. However, after undergoing chemotherapy, she made a full recovery ten years after her diagnosis.

She pursued academics and earned a doctorate in public health from Wonkwang University even while battling illness. After her recovery, she continued acting in dramas and films such as The Uncanny Counter, I Wanna Hear Your Song, Mother and Child Stroll and Homage.

Her final role was in Squid Game 2, where she delivered a heartfelt performance as Hwang Jun Ho’s (played by Wi Ha Jun) mother.
