Choi Seung Hyun, better known as T.O.P, went candid about his scene-stealing role as Thanos in Netflix’s Squid Game 2, including that viral rap scene that had viewers both cringing and cheering.
In a new video posted on Netflix Korea’s online channel, the star got into the details of his character. “I had many discussions with the director,” he shared, adding, “I wanted to give off this ambiguous feeling—whether he’s unlikeable or just full-on cringy.”
Watching Thanos’ rap scene, even T.O.P admitted, “It’s really cringy.” Reflecting on the scene where Thanos raps to Kang Mi Na (Song Ji Woo), he confessed, “Even though I’ve been rapping for over 20 years, I’ve never directly rapped to a woman before.” He added with a laugh, “I remember filming that scene in a completely mental state.”
The former BIGBANG member took the initiative in the particular scene. “I wanted there to be fewer words,” he explained, “I tried to make it intuitive, like with exaggerated gestures, something people could easily imitate.”
Social media has been buzzing with reactions, with fans commenting, “Thanos made me laugh throughout the whole show,” “The character itself is so charming. I knew international audiences would love it,” and “His portrayal of Thanos was really fresh.”
Meanwhile, Netflix reported that Squid Game 2 is poised to become one of their most-watched original series seasons, with 165.7 million viewing hours in the last quarter of the previous year. The Squid Game franchise will conclude with its third season, scheduled for release in 2025.
