Chae Soo Bin has opened up about her family’s hilarious reactions to When the Phone Rings, particularly when it comes to those steamy scenes with co-star Yoo Yeon Seok.
In the critically acclaimed series, Chae Soo Bin portrays Hong Hee Joo, a sign language interpreter battling selective mutism. The actress has earned praise for her nuanced portrayal of a character dealing with chronic lethargy and deep-seated emotional trauma from a young age.
Speaking to Newsen on the 8th, Chae praised her co-star Yoo Yeon Seok: “It was amazing. He really guided us through everything on set and helped me out so much. I honestly don’t know if things would’ve gone as well without Yeon Seok. I’m just really thankful for how he led us through it all.”
When asked about fans shipping the duo in real life, Chae responded with a laugh. She shared, “It’s really sweet. I guess that means our chemistry as Hee Joo and Sa Eon worked. I do the same thing when I watch shows from overseas, like ‘These two should totally date!’ So it makes me happy to hear that.”
Earlier, Yoo revealed that the cast had gathered to watch the final episode together. Given that the finale featured a steamy bedroom scene between Yoo and Chae, the atmosphere must have been quite charged. Chae expressed her regret for missing the group viewing due to personal commitments.
“I couldn’t watch it with everyone, but I watched it at home holding my breath,” Chae shared. When asked if she watched it with her family, she laughed, “I watched it alone. Dad wouldn’t have been able to handle it.”
Responding to questions about her family’s reactions to the drama, Chae said, “My mom seemed to really enjoy it. After every episode, she would say, ‘Wow, this is so good!'”
Chae continued, “During the broadcast, Dad was never home. He would come back around our bedtime after Mom and I had watched it, and then watch it on Netflix. I thought he couldn’t bear to watch it with us, but it turns out he was going around to all the neighbors’ houses telling them ‘Turn on your TV!’ He would watch it there and then come home to watch it again.” She added with a laugh, “But he can’t watch the kiss scenes.
He just turns them off. It must have been so hard for him. He’s never been able to watch any of my romantic scenes.”
