Our Blues
Roh Yoon Seo made her debut in the drama Our Blues, written by Noh Hee Kyung. Among an impressive cast that included Lee Byung Hun, Shin Min Ah, Cha Seung Won, Han Ji Min, Kim Woo Bin, Kim Hye Ja, and Go Doo Shim, Roh Yoon Seo was the only rookie actor to secure a spot. Despite it being her first project, she delivered a performance beyond her years, earning praise from viewers for her acting skills.
In the drama, Roh Yoon Seo played Bang Yeong Ju, a top student and class president who studies relentlessly to escape her life in Jeju, where she’s stuck with her overbearing father and uncles. Yeong Ju’s dream of attending a university in Seoul takes an unexpected turn when she finds herself pregnant with the child of Hyun, the son of her father’s nemesis, In Gwon.
Roh Yoon Seo convincingly portrayed the struggles of a teenager grappling with an unplanned pregnancy and the dilemma of considering abortion. She brought depth to the character’s emotions as Yeong Ju wrestled with her future and the life growing inside her and expressed these conflicting feelings through her composed demeanor and poignant tear-filled moments.
20th Century Girl (2022)
After her role in Our Blues, Roh Yoon Seo quickly returned to the screen in the Netflix original film 20th Century Girl, once again showcasing her talent. She plays Yeon Du, a teenage girl who must leave the country for heart surgery, even though she has a crush on her schoolmate. Unlike Young Joo in Our Blues, Yeon Du is a lively teenager who openly shares her emotions. Before her flight, she asks her friend Bo Ra (Kim Yoo Jung) to keep track of her crush, Baek Hyun Jin (Park Jung-woo), and update her on his daily activities. To help, Bo Ra gets close to Hyun Jin’s best friend, Woon Ho.
While Bo Ra values friendship over love, Yeon Du is so caught up in her feelings that she doesn’t realize how much she’s affecting her friend. As the story unfolds, Yeon Du matures and begins to understand the complexities of love and friendship. In the second half of the film, she works to untangle the relationships between the four characters, which have been complicated by her misguided choices. Roh Yoon Seo captures Yeon Du’s emotional journey with authenticity and grace, making the character’s growth feel natural and relatable.
Crash Course in Romance (2023)
Roh Yoon Seo starred in the hit drama Crash Course in Romance in 2023. Starting with a modest 4% viewership for its first episode, the series reached a peak rating of 19.8% in its finale. In Crash Course in Romance, she once again played the role of a top student, following her performance in Our Blues. However, unlike Young Joo from Jeju Island, her character Hae Yi in Crash Course in Romance struggles to survive South Korea’s intense private education craze.
Hae Yi, played by Roh Yoon Seo, maintains top grades without attending any private academies, relying solely on school lessons and self-directed study. Outwardly, she seems to have it all—excellent grades, a cheerful personality, and harmonious friendships. However, her life is far from perfect, as she was abandoned by her mother as a child and now calls her aunt, Haeng Seon, her “mom.”
Roh Yoon Seo’s nuanced performance effectively conveys Hae Yi’s complex emotions as she finds herself caught in a dilemma between her aunt Haeng Seon and the passionate teacher Choi Chi Yeol, whose feelings for each other grow increasingly difficult to hide. Her portrayal resonated deeply with viewers, earning her a place in the top 10 of Good Data’s TV Drama Actor Buzz Rankings for an extended period. She even claimed the top spot in the first week of March 2023. Without ever experiencing an anonymous phase in her career, she has firmly established herself as one of the leading actresses of her generation.
