Cho Yeo Jeong recently shared her thoughts on her role in Hidden Face during an interview on November 19th at a café in Samcheong-ro, Seoul. Directed by Kim Dae Woo, the thriller follows the disappearance of Soo Yeon (Cho Yeo Jeong), whose fiancé Sung Jin (Song Seung Heon) begins a search for her. As he becomes entangled with Mi Joo (Park Ji Hyun), Soo Yeon is revealed to be trapped in a hidden room within their home, where buried truths come to light.
Cho plays Soo Yeon, a complex character who disappears early in the story and reappears in the middle of the film, trapped in a hidden space that intensifies the film’s suspense.
Talking about the audience’s reaction to Hidden Face, Cho said, “I don’t even know how to express how I feel. I’m the type to hold myself back even when receiving praise, so I can’t say I’m just overjoyed—I feel relieved. Since I’m currently filming another project, I haven’t read many reviews, but hearing all the positive feedback has left me a bit dazed, and I’m just grateful.”
The actress said she was captivated by the script from the moment she read it. “I didn’t even have the room to think about how intense [the scenes] were,” Cho explained. “Honestly, when I read the first scene description—’Soo Yeon appears with her banged hairstyle’—I knew right away this was no ordinary role and that I wanted it. As I kept reading, I wondered, ‘Can I actually pull this off?’ The character was so vividly specific in how she was locked that it made me question if I could make her dynamic enough.”
Discussing the character’s styling, Cho said, “It was already decided. Director’s scripts aren’t usually this specific, but Soo Yeon had a clear picture. While the writing only provided descriptions, I developed her speech patterns to reflect her detached and indifferent attitude toward others.”
She described Soo Yeon as an egoist and a narcissist. “There’s a line in the film where her mother says, ‘I raised her to be this way.’ I thought about how someone raised without any shortcomings would act and speak, and I tried to bring that into the role,” she added.
Cho delivered a powerful performance as a woman grappling with shocking emotional outbursts. “The moment the camera started rolling, I naturally immersed myself in Soo Yeon’s emotions,” she shared. “The situation was so unique that it made it easier to focus and stay in character. We all knew that even the slightest lapse in concentration could break the audience’s immersion, so everyone on set gave it their absolute best.”
However, the emotional toll of filming in such a confined space lingered even after work. “Even when I came home, I felt emotionally stifled. It wasn’t intentional, but I found myself avoiding going out,” Cho revealed.
She also spoke about the physical challenges of the film, which involved intense action sequences. “I’ve never done an action movie before, so I came to really admire action stars. Even just fighting with glass and metal pipes was exhausting and left my body aching, but watching the final product made me feel great. I’m glad my efforts came through on screen. For scenes like that, a bit of pain feels inevitable.”
Hidden Face is now playing in theaters.
