The cinematographers of the hit tvN drama Lovely Runner have spilled some intriguing behind-the-scenes details about the on-set chemistry between its stars, Byeon Woo Seok and Kim Hye Yoon.
On the 29th, the YouTube channel “Kinsider_insights” featured a special episode with Lovely Runner cinematographers Yoon Dae Young and Shin Ki Chang. The duo shared their experiences working with the show’s lead actors, who have become the center of attention.
When asked about Byeon Woo Seok and Kim Hye Yoon on set, Yoon Dae Young said, “Byeon Woo Seok brought incredible dedication to his role. After struggling and preparing for years, he landed his first leading role in nine years, so he frequently spoke with the writer and prepared meticulously. He’s not only talented but also a great person.” Shin Ki Chang chimed in, “Although Kim Hye Yoon has more acting experience, she was very accommodating to Woo Seok. She made efforts to harmonize with him on set.”
Host and pop culture critic Park Hyun Min commented, “Actors who focus solely on themselves can ruin a scene, but Kim Hye Yoon wholeheartedly portrayed her character falling for Byeon Woo Seok, enhancing the story.” Another host, Director Nam Tae Jin, also gave Kim Hye Yoon a thumbs up, saying, “My wife, who watched the drama first, said Kim Hye Yoon’s performance made Byeon Woo Seok shine. And after seeing the drama, I understood why directors would love working with her.”
Yoon noted, “In dramas, it’s rare to shoot both actors together; typically, scenes are filmed separately for each actor. When one actor is performing, the other one usually reacts at a level between 1 and 100, but Kim Hye Yoon always gave her full 100 percent when reacting to Woo Seok. I believe this really helped elevate his performance.”
Discussing their on-set chemistry, Shin revealed, “They were really close. Their on-screen chemistry didn’t just happen out of nowhere. At times, we wondered if they were actually dating due to their intense focus.” Yoon shared a touching moment, “Their eyes showed genuine care and love for each other. I felt overwhelmed shooting them; it just made us fall deep into the purity and fresh feelings of first love.”
When it came to Byeon Woo Seok’s stunning looks, Yoon remarked, “We try to capture his looks on camera, but he’s even more handsome in person,” leaving the hosts in awe.
Lovely Runner features romantic scenes between characters aged 19, 20, and 34, with many memorable kiss scenes. Which kiss scene did the cinematographers consider the best?
Director Yoon chose the kiss scene at the front door of Sol’s house. “We filmed the scene for so long that I even asked the director, ‘Isn’t this a bit too long?’ I remember the kiss lasting a very long time.” Shin added, “Even though it’s a rom-com, we shot it like a romance drama.”
When Nam Tae Jin commented, “Personally, I loved the kiss scene in the beach house when they were lying down. It was beautifully shot, not in the usual angles,” Yoon Dae Young responded, “Usually, we shoot from a 90-degree side angle, but for that scene, we adjusted the angles to match the characters. We aimed to capture a lovely atmosphere.”
