12.12: The Day has become the second most-watched Korean film of the year, registering over 5.27 million viewers in just 15 days after its release.

The Korean Film Council reported that the movie attracted 203,048 viewers yesterday, bringing the cumulative audience to an impressive 5,271,165.

With this record, the film has surpassed the box office collection of the summer release Smugglers (5.14 million viewers) and ranked as the second-highest-grossed film among all Korean films released this year, following The Roundup: No Way Out.

Moreover, it’s gaining momentum faster than iconic Korean successes like Masquerade and Ode to My Father, both of which achieved the glorious 10 million-viewer milestone.

The film is based on a true event after the assassination of South Korean President Park, leading to an attempted coup and a clash among military leaders.

Directed by Kim Sung Su, known for Asura: The City of Madness, City of the Rising Sun and Beat, and starring top actors like Hwang Jung Min and Jung Woo Sung, it quickly gained attention and topped the box office upon its release. It also received high scores from various South Korean movie review websites, with a CGV Golden Egg Index of 98% and a Naver star rating of 9.40.

12.12: The Day is now playing in South Korean and U.S. theaters.
