Rowoon Shares His Take on Relationships and Unconventional Acting Prep

Rowoon graced the cover of the December issue of At Star1 magazine.

The actor has led two romantic comedy dramas this year, emerging as a “rom-com king” in the K-drama scene. After JTBC’s Destined With You, he is starring as marriage broker Shim Jung Woo in The Matchmaker. In an interview following the photoshoot, he was asked whether he has ever set up dates for his acquaintances. He answered, “I’m not interested in other people’s relationships. Getting involved in someone else’s romance usually leads to trouble.”

Having worked with mostly older co-stars in Tomorrow, The King’s Affection and Destined With You, he shared what it was like teaming up with Cho Yi Hyun, who is younger than him, for The Matchmaker. “Yi Hyun’s character is older than mine, so I purposely gained 3kg (6 pounds) to look just as young as her,” he said, making everyone laugh.

Regarding his approach to dating, he shared, “I believe maintaining a healthy distance, even with someone you love, is important. I prefer a relationship where both partners support and benefit each other rather than imposing on each other’s freedom.”

It has already been seven years since Rowoon made his debut as an actor. Beginning with minor roles, the singer-turned-actor steadily solidified his position as a lead actor through continuous effort.

He shared, “I usually read the script repeatedly and even memorize my co-star’s lines. So, preparing for the project can be challenging. You know what, I even put the script under my pillow and pray that I can memorize all the lines before filming.”

Despite taking on diverse roles, Rowoon remains humble about his talent. He said, “Although I haven’t created a signature character yet, I think that works to my advantage as an actor. It allows people to see me as a character in the show.”
