The Marvels has unveiled the Prince Yan character, played by Park Seo Joon, and his home planet Aladna.
Prince Yan is the trusted prince of the planet Aladna, which team Marvels, including Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), visits to thwart the villain Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton). His past intricate relationship with Carol makes for an entertaining dynamic. As Aladna is a planet where communication is done through song, Prince Yan’s grand entrance will be particularly memorable—a duet with Carol, singing and dancing as they converse.
Regarding Marvel’s first musical sequence, Park Seo Joon shared, “When they were composing this music, they checked my vocal range and seemed to create music that suited it. Instead of focusing on singing well, I tried to think more about the emotions in that scene.”
He also spoke about his character Prince Yan and the planet Aladna, “I think Aladna and Prince Yan play a role in helping Carol grow to the next level. It may seem brief, but I believe it’s an essential part of the overall story of The Marvels.”
The musical planet Aladna is designed to look like a blend of Positano’s cliffside views with alien technology. Set designer Cara Brower drew inspiration from the pastel buildings of Morocco, the soft limestone and beautiful hues of the Amalfi coast, the brutalist style churches of Tbilisi, and the surreal vibe that pop artists like Janelle Monáe, Björk, and Lady Gaga give off.
Furthermore, the musical sequence, which instantaneously showcases the characteristics of Aladneans who communicate through song and dance, involved over 100 dancers. Cinematographer Sean Bobbitt expressed, “The moment I learned there was a musical sequence, I knew it had to be memorable.” He captured the scene’s dynamism using a steadicam while flying over the air, with the cameraman tied to wires.
Audiences have continued to praise Park Seo Joon’s brief yet impactful appearance, with comments like “It’s still so amazing to see a Korean actor in Marvel” and “Park Seo Joon’s role is important and impressive despite the screen time!”
