In recent days, several K-pop idols had to halt their activities due to deteriorating health conditions.

Yesterday, news broke that BLACKPINK’s Jennie had to sit out a concert due to health concerns. YG Entertainment released a statement on the fan community stating, “During the BLACKPINK WORLD TOUR [BORN PINK] IN MELBOURNE concert on June 11th, she couldn’t be on stage until the end due to her poor condition. We apologize to the fans who supported BLACKPINK and came to the venue, and we ask for your understanding.”

The company continued, “Jennie showed her willingness to push ahead with the performance until the end, but immediately took measures to ensure sufficient rest and stability with the recommendation of medical staff on the spot” and added, “Jenny felt sorry for not being able to stay with her fans until the end and expressed her intention to recover quickly. We will do our best to support Jenny to recover her condition as soon as possible. I ask for your understanding once again.”

Jennie has been pulling off an intense schedule, fulfilling not only her commitments as a BLACKPINK member but also as an ambassador for luxury brands, and most recently, making her acting debut in the HBO drama The Idol. She even walked the red carpet at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.

Similarly, Giselle of aespa has also been absent from her scheduled activities due to health issues. Giselle did not appear for the recording of JTBC’s variety show Knowing Bros on the first of the month. Her absence was explained by fellow group member Karina on the show, stating, “Giselle couldn’t make it today because she wasn’t feeling well.” On the 7th, SM Entertainment announced that “Giselle will not participate in the 2023 Governors Ball due to health problems.”

Red Velvet’s Joy has also temporarily ceased her activities due to health concerns. On April 26th, SM Entertainment stated, “Joy recently visited a hospital due to poor health. Following consultation and diagnosis, the medical staff recommended rest and treatment.” They added, “She will be resting and not participating in the schedule for the time being.”

Joy personally gave an update to her fans. She stated, “I feel heavy-hearted thinking about our fans, who might be tired and worried from the uncertain wait.” She added, “I was afraid to let go of everything and take time for myself, but thanks to your understanding, I am managing well.”

This spate of health-related activity halts amongst idols has set off a “health warning” in the music industry. On the 9th, SHINee’s Onew also had to take a break from all activities due to health issues, further adding to fans’ concerns, especially as SHINee was planning to release a new album and hold a concert by the end of the month to mark their 15th debut anniversary.
