Kim Da Mi, who has dreamed of becoming an actress since childhood, made her debut in the independent film 2017 Project With The Same Name in 2017. The following year, she beat out 1499 other hopefuls and got the leading role in The Witch: Part 1 and The Subversion which made her an instant sensation. Taking on the role of Ji Yoon, a high school student who has lost the memories of her past, she did an impressive job of depicting the character who learns who she truly is as she faces various mysterious events. Through the role, she became a sensational rookie actress and swept various film awards while enjoying the media attention on her moves.
Kim Da Mi chose to star in the TV series Itaewon Class (2020) after proving her potential as an excellent actress with The Witch: Part 1. She played a social media influencer named Jo Yi Seo. Although she drew attention everywhere she went because of her excellent speech and twisted sense of humor, she lacked empathy and had some sociopathic traits at the beginning of the drama. Kim Da Mi has successfully brought her multi-dimensional character to life with different acting strategies. For instance, she noticed that the original character in the webtoon showed very little facial expression. She then chose to create her own character by reinterpreting the role rather than copying the one from the original work. For this work, she won the Best New Actress Award in the TV category at the 2020 Baeksang Arts Awards, successfully building her presence on TV just like how she did in movies.
She has played many characters with strong personalities. This time, she is about to show a very realistic character in the upcoming SBS romance drama Our Beloved Summer. It revolves around ex-lovers who broke up with a promise never to meet again. But the documentary they filmed ten years ago gets famous, and the two are forced to face the camera together once more. Kim Da Mi will play Choi Woo Shik’s ex-lover named Kook Yeon Soo, a PR expert who puts reality over love.
In 2022, she will meet the audience with Hello, My Soulmate (working title), a remake of the Chinese movie of the same name. It is a work that depicts the friendship and growth of two women who have been close friends since their childhood. She recently finished filming the movie with Jeon So Ni and Byun Woo Seok. Plus, she will be in the sequel to the movie The Witch, which made her famous. However, she is expected to make a cameo appearance instead of leading the play.
Although it’s been less than five years since she first showed herself in the industry, Kim Da Mi has established herself as a promising actress with her exceptional talent in acting. I hope her path will continue on successfully as it does now.
Editor Seo Hayne: I like actors as they faithfully lead through their long running-time. I also like idols who accomplish everything on stage within 3 minutes.
Translator Cho EK: I’m a big fan of Korean dramas and movies.
