The global pop sensation BTS has scored only one nomination for the 2022 Grammys.
On the 23rd, the Recording Academy revealed the nominees for the 2022 Grammy Awards. And BTS’ name was on the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category with their mega-hit song “Butter.”
Previously, Forbes and Billboard predicted that Grammys would put BTS in one of the “big four” categories like the General Field but it turned out to be otherwise.
Soon, many media outlets reacted negatively toward the released list, mainly because the group’s “‘Butter’ spent a whopping 10 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart” according to LA Times. Later, the outlet said this in one of their articles: “The Grammys snub comes days after BTS dominated the fan-voted American Music Awards and became the first Asian group to win the show’s top honor: artist of the year.”
USA Today also named BTS in the Grammys snubs 2022 alongside Miley Cyrus and Drake. Introducing “Butter” as a blissfully fun contribution from the K-pop superstars, they wrote, “not to mention the song of summer that broke a record on Spotify’s global chart for biggest song debut in the platform’s history. So only one nod for best pop duo/group performance? The BTS Army would like a word.”
The Grammys is considered the most conservative among the three major awards. It was constantly criticized for being white and male-dominated. Last year, BTS was nominated for the same award with “Dynamite” but went home empty-handed. But as Hugh McIntyre from Forbes wrote, “the good news is that the K-pop powerhouses are already frontrunners for the one Grammy they are competing for.”
Meanwhile, the 64th Grammy Awards ceremony will be held on January 31st, 2022, at the Staples Center.
