According to KOFIC (Korean Film Council), the film Escape from Mogadishu topped the box office, attracting 788,115 moviegoers on its opening weekend. It makes the movie with the largest number of viewers garnered on the opening week among all Korean films released in 2021. As reported by the current box office trends, the film will most likely see more than 1 million viewers this week.

The reasons behind the movie’s success at the box office are the beautiful exotic scenery of Morocco throughout the movie and the realistic car chase scene in the second half of the film. Many left favorable reviews regarding the thrilling experience on a large screen of the theater and how it gave a strong sense of immersion.

Meanwhile, The Cursed Dead Mans Prey, which was released on the same day, started on a low note collecting only 120,000 moviegoers. Unlike Escape from Mogadishu, the thriller doesn’t have the privilege to forgo ticket sales split until the box office reaches 50% of the budget. Despite the challenging circumstances, it appears to have failed to captivate the audience since it is a spin-off film of an existing drama series.
