tvN’s new series Melancholia is set in a private high school that is a breeding ground for corruption. It will tell a beautiful story of a math teacher and a prodigy.

Penned by writer Kim Ji Woon, Melancholia will paint out a dramatic story that features two exciting keywords, “math” and “genius.” True Beauty and Extraordinary You director Kim Sang Hyup will helm the production.

Im Soo Jung plays Ji Yoon Soo, a high school math teacher. Behind her enchanting smile and good impression, she has unwavering tenacity and stubbornness. But above all, she is a math lover who gets excited when reading about Millennium Prize Problems. She is the teacher who encourages her students who are weighed down by the weight of education to find their own “answers” and “proof.”

Lee Do Hyun takes on the role of Baek Seung Yoo, a math genius. He’s a voluntary loner who doesn’t like to speak much but enjoys taking pictures with his DSLR. His grades are at the bottom of the entire school. But he has a hidden past of being the top contestant who swept all the math competitions who entered MIT at 10. Although he had surprised the world as a prodigy, he dropped out of college when he was 12 and covered his tracks, becoming “the genius who vanished into a thin air.”

Teaching the beauty of numbers and the joy of mathematical proof, Ji Soo finds out a hidden genius. What kind of “discovery” will they make together?

Melancholia will premiere in the latter half of this year.
