Park Chan Wook Will Direct TV Adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Novel ‘The Sympathizer’

Director Park Chan Wook will produce the TV adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize�”winning 2015 novel, The Sympathizer.

On April 7th, American media outlet Vulture reported the news by quoting Viet Thanh Nguyen’s tweet that reads, “Thrilled to finally announce that A24 has optioned THE SYMPATHIZER for TV, with director Park Chan-wook, whose films include THE HANDMAIDEN. His OLDBOY was a big influence on THE SYMPATHIZER, and I can’t imagine a better person to direct this TV adaptation with Rhombus Media!”

The novelist will be “talking to Lee Isaac Chung of MINARI for the A24 podcast and will gush more about Park Chan-wook then.” He also expressed his joy in production, saying, “I hope Park Chan-wook, who did wonders with the octopus in OLDBOY, will be equally imaginative with the squid in THE SYMPATHIZER…”

The Sympathizer is a genre-bending epic that won both the Edgar Award and the Pulitzer Prize in the same year. It follows an anonymous Vietnamese protagonist who works as a communist double agent after immigrating to Los Angeles. Park Chan Wook is “the visionary Korean director” who produced The Vengeance Trilogy and The Handmaiden. A24 recently distributed Minari that has shook the world with its magnificence.
