K-POP Idols Include Their Own Worldview in Their Solo Albums

On September 7, SHINee’s Taemin, Apink’s Kim Namjoo, and OH MY GIRL’s YooA released their solo albums side by side. In new albums, each of them included their own worldview reminiscent of a movie.

Taemin described his third full-length album Never Gonna Dance Again: Act 1 as a “thriller movie.” This album is the first part of Taemin’s third full-length album, and will complete his new full-length album with Act 2. Taemin introduced the album by saying, “It’s terrifying in a way, but it also acts as a link to the next album Act 2.” He tried to make the album itself like a full movie and took “movie” as a reference. In the album, he talked about the agony and challenge of breaking through the familiar world and finding a new identity just like a story from a movie. With the synthwave title track “Criminal,” he melted the opponent’s fatal charm under the theme of “Stockholm syndrome” in the lyrics, and completed an intense song with Taemin’s sensual voice and powerful performances.

Taking the motif from Hermann Hesse’s novel Demian, Kim Namjoo released a solo song with a completely different feeling from Apink’s pure and lively charm. Bird is a new album that shows solo artist Kim Namjoo’s determination to show her power. She was inspired by this line “The bird fights its way out of the egg” from the novel Demian and tried to express how the bird breaks out of its egg to become a female warrior. The title track of the same name is a trap music appropriately added with oriental elements, and contains Namjoo’s heartfelt message of “I won’t hesitate to fly for everything I love and dream.”

YooA, the first OH MY GIRL member to make a solo debut, has released her first mini-album Bon Voyage, which includes a total of five songs, including the dreamy and mysterious title track “Bon Voyage.” “Bon Voyage” is a song that combines a cinematic sound with YooA’s unique voice. It also and tension with subtle jungle rhythms. YooA’s mystical voice goes perfectly with the synth-pop sounds. The scene of a child running freely in the arms of Mother Nature reminds us of a mysterious journey in the movie Moana.
