tvN’s upcoming weekend drama Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born has released its first two posters, giving audiences a glimpse of the highly anticipated series set against the backdrop of a national theater troupe.
Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born is a historical drama set in the 1950s, just after the Korean War, during a time of poverty but also romanticism. The series follows Jeong Nyeon, a natural vocal talent, as she strives to become the top national theater actress amid fierce competition and deep bonds. Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, Jeong Nyeon explores the unique world of female national theater—a genre that saw all roles played by women and gained massive popularity during the Korean War era. The drama has already generated buzz for its fresh take on this fascinating period and for depicting the journey of a young woman overcoming her limitations to become a star in the national theater troupe.
The series is directed by Jung Ji In, who won the 34th Korean Producer Awards for “Director of the Year” for his work on The Red Sleeve. The cast includes Kim Tae Ri—the muse of the original webtoon as revealed by the artist—as Jeong Nyeon; Shin Ye Eun as Heo Young Seo; Ra Mi Ran as Kang So Bok; Jung Eun Chae as Moon Ok Kyung; and Kim Yoon Hye as Seo Hye Rang. Moon So Ri also makes a special appearance as Seo Yong Rye. With such an impressive lineup, Jeong Nyeon has quickly become one of the most anticipated dramas of the year.
On the 21st, two posters were released, heightening expectations even further. The first poster showcases the five central characters standing in front of the national theater, with Kim Tae Ri as the “voice genius” Jeong Nyeon, who has traveled alone from Mokpo to Seoul to pursue her dream of becoming a national theater actress. Her bright eyes, gleaming with talent and determination, are sure to captivate viewers.
Shin Ye Eun portrays Heo Young Seo, a well-rounded performer with an elite background, setting up a tense rivalry with Jeong Nyeon. Ra Mi Ran exudes charisma as Kang So Bok, the head of the Maeran Women’s National Theater Troupe. Jung Eun Chae and Kim Yoon Hye appear as the troupe’s “prince” Moon Ok Kyung and “princess” Seo Hye Rang, respectively, radiating star power.
Another poster captures the essence of the 1950s, with a nostalgic and lively street scene. In the center, a young Jeong Nyeon, filled with admiration, gazes up at the signboard of the national theater. The sign reveals an image of the older Jeong Nyeon, portrayed by Kim Tae Ri, standing under the spotlight as the star of the troupe. This powerful visual symbolizes the journey that Jeong Nyeon will embark on, from a hopeful dreamer to the leading figure of the national theater.
The production team commented, “We’ve worked hard to capture the charm of 1950s women’s national theater and to bring it to viewers. Kim Tae Ri and the rest of the cast have delivered outstanding performances, perfectly embodying their characters. Paired with Jung Ji In’s stylish direction, ‘Jeong Nyeon’ is set to be a drama that excels in acting, directing, and storytelling. We hope viewers will look forward to it.”
Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born, one of 2024’s most anticipated dramas, will premiere on tvN on Saturday, October 12th, at 9:20 PM KST.
