Netflix’s upcoming movie My Name is Loh Kiwan is set to release on March 1st. The teaser poster and trailer, recently unveiled, promise a tale of determination and survival.
The teaser poster features Loh Kiwan (Song Joong Ki) standing alone amidst a crowd, symbolizing his solitary journey in a strange land filled with unfamiliar faces. His unwavering demeanor and resolute gaze hint at his firm resolve, while the tagline “I have decided to survive in this land” teases Loh Kiwan’s arduous journey upon arriving in Belgium, fueled by the last hope of a better life.
The teaser further delves into Loh Kiwan’s treacherous journey to Belgium. Viewers see a visibly anxious Kiwan awaiting immigration clearance, highlighting his vulnerability. But his arrival in Belgium marks only the beginning of a lonely battle against harsh winters and hunger in an alien world, void of any possessions and a language barrier.
One poignant scene showcases Kiwan calmly stating his name and nationality to be recognized as a refugee, interspersed with flashbacks of his life-threatening journey to Belgium. Yet, a blunt response about the lack of proof of his origins from North Korea leaves him collapsing on the cold ground, intensifying the sense of despair.
Kiwan’s path then crosses with Mari (Choi Sung Eun), a woman who has lost her purpose in life. Their encounter, seemingly bound by a shared sense of despair and loss, raises questions about their intertwined destinies and the challenges they will face. Kiwan’s voice resonates with the audience, saying, “I have managed to come this far by promising myself that I would endure and overcome whatever hell I experienced in this land,” leaving a lasting impact.
Based on the novel I Met Loh Kiwan by author Jo Hae Jin, My Name is Loh Kiwan is a gripping story about a North Korean defector arriving in Belgium with the last glimmer of hope and a woman who has lost her way in life. Starring Song Joong Ki and Choi Sung Eun, and marking the directorial debut of Kim Hee Jin, the film is set to premiere globally on Netflix on March 1st.
