Kim Woo Bin spoke out about acting opposite Suzy in Netflix’s new fantasy romance Genie, Make a Wish.
Genie, Make a Wish centers on a lamp genie, Genie (Kim Woo Bin), who awakens after a thousand years and meets an emotionally-numb human, Ga Young (Suzy). The show follows their dealings over three wishes in a stress-free romantic fantasy.
Kim Woo Bin and Suzy reunite on screen nearly a decade after Uncontrollably Fond. He said, “Even though it was a long time, the gap didn’t feel long at all. I felt really comfortable — our personalities aren’t very different. That comfort was nice. We didn’t need to warm up; we could get straight to talking about the story.”
Early in the series, there was mixed audience feedback about Suzy’s turn as a psychopathic character. Kim responded, “I really like Suzy’s acting. Though she may look expressionless, she acts in a very subtle and delicate way. From my side, her reactions were more than enough when we acted face to face.”
Of note, the show initially worked under director Lee Byung Heon, but midway he was replaced by Ahn Gil Ho. On this change, Kim said, “On set there are always variables, so I adapted. But because I’ve worked with Director Lee before, there’s some disappointment I couldn’t finish with him.” He quickly added, “But Director Ahn led us well and we had fun until the end.”
When asked about differences between the two directors, Kim joked, “Their faces are different,” then clarified more seriously: “They’re not hugely different in style. Both are quiet, both make the staff comfortable. They’re both good people, so the differences don’t stand out.”
Genie, Make a Wish is now available for streaming on Netflix.
