Jinyoung took a charming trip down memory lane, sharing details about his own first love experience while promoting his new film.
On February 27th, Jinyoung sat down for an interview about his starring role in You Are the Apple of My Eye, a Korean remake of the popular Taiwanese film. The movie follows the story of Jin Woo (Jinyoung), an immature teenager who spends countless days before finally confessing his feelings to his crush Sun Ah (Dahyun).
When asked if filming the coming-of-age romance brought back memories of his own first love, Jinyoung admitted with a smile that it certainly did.
“If we’re talking about first love, I had one in sixth grade and another in my first year of high school. People usually say ‘Come on’ when you mention a sixth-grade first love. But I truly think that was my real first love. Those feelings were incredibly strong, and I have many memories from that time. Looking back, I had many similarities to Jin Woo,” he began.
He continued, “She was a transfer student from Seoul, and I fell for her at first sight. I wanted to become close friends with her so badly, but whenever I was in front of her, I couldn’t speak. Somehow, we added each other on Buddy Buddy [a Korean messenger service], and online, we chatted like the closest of friends. I’d say ‘See you tomorrow,’ but when we actually met the next day, I couldn’t even say hello. Then I’d go home and chat with her easily again. I even asked her out through messenger. But even after we started dating, I still couldn’t greet her properly.”
The story got even more endearing as he explained, “Eventually, a friend got tired of watching us and suggested the three of us go eat pork cutlets together. But what’s even funnier is that I couldn’t even tell her I wanted to break up. We just gradually drifted apart. We never even went on a proper date. That meal with our friend was the end of it.”
Jinyoung concluded with a thoughtful reflection on his character: “At first, I didn’t understand why Jin Woo behaved the way he did. I thought, ‘If you like her, just tell her!’ But thinking back to my younger self, I realized I could totally relate to him, and it made me empathize with the character so much more.”
