A Taiwanese influencer has alleged that Wang Xiaofei, the ex-husband of late actress Barbie Hsu, and his mother Zhang Lan are embroiled in a $142 million debt controversy.
According to Taiwan’s ET Today, the influencer revealed that Wang and Zhang allegedly established trusts under relatives’ names in Taiwan to conceal and launder funds, following their accumulation of massive debt.
The source explained the origin of the debt: “They falsely reported sales figures when selling their company to a private equity firm. The firm sued Zhang Lan, and the court ordered her to pay $142 million in compensation. Zhang transferred the money to Taiwan and established trust funds under Wang Xiaofei and his relatives’ names, claiming she no longer had any connection to the funds.”
The influencer added, “The private equity firm discovered that Zhang had secretly diverted fund money to purchase real estate in New York. The court ruled that she was the actual administrator of the trust and that the firm could recover the money in Taiwan.”
This revelation has intensified public interest in Barbie Hsu’s inheritance matters. Her widower, Koo Jun Yup, previously stated, “The precious inheritance Barbie left behind was accumulated through her blood and sweat to protect her beloved family, so I plan to give all my rights to my mother-in-law. For the children’s portion, I will take legal measures through lawyers to protect it until they become adults, preventing bad people from touching it.”
However, local lawyers have challenged Koo’s plan, stating that directly transferring his wife’s inheritance to his mother-in-law is legally impossible. They noted, “If he renounces the inheritance, Koo’s rights will be equally inherited by the two children, and the mother-in-law won’t receive anything. In this case, ex-husband Wang Xiaofei could potentially claim all rights to Barbie Hsu’s assets using his custody of the two children.”
