Seong Hyun Woo opened up about a frightening experience he says nearly turned tragic.

The singer, who first gained attention on Produce 101 Season 2, revealed in a video posted on February 22nd to his YouTube channel WOO that he was chased by a man armed with a knife during a solo trip to Jeju in 2021.

“I went to Jeju alone while preparing for my solo debut and working on my own songs,” he said in the video, titled “The time I almost got killed on a trip to Jeju, 100% real story.” According to Seong Hyun Woo, the incident began at a restaurant where he saw an intoxicated man verbally abusing a foreign part-time employee. “I asked him to quiet down, and that’s when things escalated,” he explained.

After leaving the restaurant, the man allegedly approached him and asked, “Are you good at fighting?” before pulling out a knife. “He had his wrist and the handle wrapped tightly in bandages to secure the weapon,” Seong Hyun Woo said. “I knew I couldn’t fight him, so I just ran. When I looked back, he was chasing me with the knife.”

He said he managed to escape by ducking into an alley and eventually returned to his guesthouse, where he called the police. Officers later subdued the suspect nearby. “The moment I saw the police, the tension hit me all at once. I felt like I was going to throw up, and my hands were shaking even as I wrote my statement,” he recalled.

The suspect was later arrested on charges of making threats while carrying a dangerous weapon, which carries heavier penalties than standard intimidation charges.

Reflecting on the experience, Seong Hyun Woo said, “If I had tried to fight back, something really bad could have happened. Never argue with someone who’s drunk, and be especially careful in isolated places late at night.”

Seong Hyun Woo is a former member of the boy group Limitless and previously promoted under the stage name A.M. He gained recognition through Produce 101 Season 2 and made his solo debut in 2021 with the digital single “No Regret.”
