The legal battle is over for Taeil, a former member of the K-pop group NCT.

The Supreme Court of South Korea has finalized his prison sentence for sexual assault.

The Supreme Court’s First Division rejected the appeals filed by Taeil and two accomplices, upholding the lower court’s ruling on December 26th. Taeil will serve three years and six months in prison for violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes.

Taeil, along with two acquaintances identified as Mr. Lee and Mr. Hong, met a foreign woman at a club in Itaewon. The court found that the three men took advantage of the victim’s intoxicated and incapacitated state to sequentially rape her. DNA evidence from all three defendants was found on the victim’s body.

In the initial trial last July, the court sentenced Taeil and his accomplices to three and a half years in prison and ordered their immediate detention. The appellate court later upheld this sentence, adding mandatory requirements for the completion of a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program and a five-year ban on employment at institutions related to children, adolescents, and persons with disabilities.

The final judgment remains unchanged despite Taeil’s appeal to the Supreme Court. In his final statement to the court, Taeil said, “I admit to all my crimes and deeply reflect on them. Although the victim’s wounds cannot be healed, I sincerely apologize.”
