SHINee’s Key is facing sharply divided reactions after admitting he received medical treatment from a controversial figure linked to Park Na Rae and issuing a public apology.
On the 17th, Key’s agency SM Entertainment released a statement explaining that he visited a Gangnam-based clinic after being referred by an acquaintance and believed Lee—often dubbed “Injection Aunt” online—to be a licensed doctor. According to the agency, Key continued receiving treatment at the clinic and, on several occasions when visiting the hospital was difficult, also received care at home.
The agency said Key did not realize home treatment could be problematic and was deeply shaken upon learning Lee was not a licensed physician, adding that he is reflecting on his own ignorance.
Key echoed that sentiment in a post on Instagram, writing, “I sincerely apologize for causing concern to so many people.” He said he was confused and shaken by what he learned and apologized for not clarifying his position sooner. “I believed I could keep myself far from situations like this,” he added, “but that confidence prevented me from looking more carefully at my surroundings.”
Online, reactions quickly split. Some praised Key for openly acknowledging his mistake and repeatedly apologizing, noting that his response differed from Park Na Rae’s, who has emphasized legal action rather than issuing a direct apology amid related allegations.
Others, however, expressed disappointment. Fans pointed to Key’s past remarks about avoiding scandals and not letting his fans down, saying they felt “betrayed.” Questions were also raised about his long-standing acquaintance with the individual involved and the fact that his mother is a former nurse.
Adding to the criticism, Key and SM Entertainment remained silent for more than 10 days while he was on a U.S. concert tour and attending fan signings even to the day the apologies were issued.
In the wake of the controversy, Key has stepped down from all programs he was set to appear on or currently featured in.
